The Amphitheatre at Clifton Forge, VA has opened its doors (or should we say, out-doors?). TCC’s Josh Allen served as theatre consultant to the students of Virginia Tech’s design/buildLAB. The theatre is situated creekside, on a piece of property adjacent to the Historic Masonic Theatre (another TCC project currently in design), in rural Clifton Forge, VA, in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.

For $150,000.00, the architecture students of design/buildLAB designed, gathered repurposed materials, and built the venue themselves (with generous donations from local and entertainment industry suppliers, contractors, and designers.) The site was once home to an old tire warehouse, which was dismantled, and and repurposed for both this project and to build a local farmers market.

For the full story from ArchDaily, loads of great photos, design documents and more, click HERE.

You can also watch a nifty time-lapse video of the construction below.

This video documents the construction of the Masonic Amphitheatre in Clifton Forge, VA. The project was designed and built by 16 students from Virginia Tech’s design/buildLAB, helmed by Keith and Marie Zawistowski, with Josh Allen of Theatre Consultants Collaborative as theatre consultant. The video and photos were put together by photographer Jeff Goldeberg of Esto.

DPAC ranked #1 by Pollstar

TCC’s project with Szostak Design, Inc. in Durham, NC has been ranked busiest theatre in the U.S., and second busiest theatre in the world by Pollstar. Read the article below reprinted from DPAC’s blog posted July 16, 2012:

DPAC is Number One

Again, Durham, NC comes out tops on a list, this time in the form of its internationally recognized performing arts center. DPAC – Durham Performing Arts Center was ranked by the industry publication Pollstar as being the second busiest theater in the world in their 2012 Midyear ranking of Worldwide Ticket Sales Top 100 Theatre Venues.

That makes DPAC the busiest theater in the US, since the number one spot on the list is a theater in Mexico. Durham’s Carolina Theatre came in at 88th.

DPAC also recently won a top ranking from the consumer travel website, TripAdvisor – the theater now bears the site’s Certificate of Excellence.

This is a nice additional feather in Durham’s cap. Last week, Durham was ranked as the top market in the US for the creative class.

Well known as an open and accepting haven for those in, and those interested in, the arts, Durham is home to more than a dozen theaters which are well supported by the community and those who visit. Learn more about Durham as a great place to visit by visiting on the web.

Due to open in fall of 2012, the Topfer Theatre, at 420 seats and with a stage three and a half times larger than ZACH’s Mainstage, will nearly double the seating capacity at this renowned theatre campus on Lady Bird Lake while retaining the intimate theatre-going experience for which ZACH is known. TCC worked closely with the design team to create a functional energy model which is predicted to earn an unanticipated 7 LEED points.

The Dock Street Theatre was built within the historic shell of the Planters Hotel (circa 1800) and is located on the site of the first theatre building in America. Home to the Charleston Stage Company and a primary venue for Spoleto Festival USA, the historic venue underwent an extensive three year renovation to bring it up to contemporary performance standards. Extensive soundproofing was added to ensure that external noise no longer intruded on performances. The theatre was made fully ADA accessible.

Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theatre is a state-of-the-art live music venue that doubles as the new home of KLRU-TV’s acclaimed Austin City Limits music series. The primary goal was to make this venue feel as much like ACL’s old Studio 6A as possible thus the main floor mimics the proportions and the audience has the same proximity to the stage. Flexible staging and adjustable seating offers a variable capacity between 300 and 2,700 patrons on three levels with no seat further than 80-feet from the stage.
